TOP 10 HELPFUL HINTS FOR APSCUF GUEST BLOGGERS

UPDATED JUNE 2011

  1. Less is more. Don’t feel like you have to write a treatise on what it means to be a member of APSCUF. Pick a small topic and then try to make it even smaller. Maybe you want to write about CAP? Try writing about what made you write that first check to CAP or what it was like attending an event with CAP. APSCUF is mainly looking for blog entries from 300 to 750 words. If you find you’re writing more, try to break it up into smaller posts for a series.
  2. A picture is worth a thousand words. If you have a photo or graphic that helps tell your story, use it. Video is even better.
  3. Headlines are key. Most people will decide whether or not they want to read your wonderful prose just from the headline. Make it provocative or pose a question that demands your readers’ attention.
  4. Links are your friends. If you’re citing a newspaper article, hyperlink to the article. If you’re talking about an organization, hyperlink to their homepage.
  5. Lists are your friends, too. They provide structure for the writer, and they’re easy to read. If you can’t think of what to write, start writing a list.
  6. Break it up. When reading online, most people skim. Short paragraphs are better. Headings and subheadings also improve online readability.
  7. Have a call to action. Once you’re done writing your fantastic and persuasive blog post, consider asking your audience to do something. Do what? How about join CAP? Or contact their legislators? Or simply add their thoughts in the comments section?
  8. Keep it positive. There’s a lot of good APSCUF is doing for its members. There’s a lot of good our members are doing for students. We’re trying to find and highlight those stories.
  9. Be passionate. Most APSCUF members love what they do – they love teaching, they love research, they love being a campus leader. Don’t be afraid to allow that passion to shine through.
  10. Be yourself. Be true to your point of view and writing style. People want to read a unique blog post by a real, live human being.
